It is easier to prevent pests in hydroponic systems than to control them once they have taken hold. Below are some tips for preventing and controlling pests in hydroponic systems:

Use good hygiene practices

Always clean and disinfect all equipment and tools before and after use.  This helps to prevent the spread of pests and diseases

Monitor the plants regularly

Check the plants regularly for signs of pests and diseases. This way you can detect and treat any problems early on. Use sticky traps to identify the pests.

Use biological control agents

Beneficial insects such as ladybugs & lacewings can help control pests. This may not be advisable in large farms due to use of pesticides at times needed.

Use organic pesticides 

Insecticides soap and neem oil are effective against many common pests in hydroponic systems. They are also safe and non-toxic.

Make sure the water has the right pH and temperature: Most pests and diseases thrive in warm, humid conditions. By maintaining the right pH and temperature of the water, you can prevent many common problems.

Rockwool

It is also known as stone wool, is a widely used hydroponics growing medium. It is made from melted basalt rock and other materials, it provides excellent water retention and aeration capabilities. 

Rockwool is easy to work with, pH-neutral, and holds moisture well, promoting healthy root development. Its fibrous structure allows for sufficient oxygenation and nutrient absorption. However, proper handling and pH adjustment is crucial to prevent potential nutrient imbalances.

NOTE:Though rockwool has many desirable properties for use in hydroponics, it is not biodegradable and the dust from the cubes is harmful to health. So wear proper protective gear like a mask and gloves when working with rockwool.

Cocopeat

Cocopeat is derived from coconut husks, is another popular growing medium in hydroponics. It has exceptional water retention and aeration properties, offering an ideal balance for plant roots. It is ideal for germination and can be easily removed during transplanting.

Cocopeat or coco coir is renewable, environmentally friendly. It can be used alone or mixed with other media to enhance its properties. Expanded Clay Pebbles

Expanded clay pebbles, also called hydroton or LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate), are widely used in hydroponics systems. These porous clay balls provide excellent drainage, aeration, and stability.

They are pH-neutral, sterile, and reusable. Expanded clay pebbles offer optimal oxygenation and prevent overwatering. However, they do not retain moisture, so frequent watering or automated irrigation systems are necessary. But moisture retention varies from the type of material the pebbles are made from. Leca made from fly ash has less moisture retention when compared with leca made out of pure clay.

Perlite

It is a lightweight volcanic glass and is extensively used in hydroponics for its exceptional drainage and aeration characteristics. It promotes oxygen flow to plant roots and prevents waterlogging. 

Perlite is sterile, pH-neutral, and retains minimal moisture, reducing the risk of root rot. It is often mixed with other media to enhance drainage properties. However, perlite does not provide any nutritional value and may require frequent nutrient supplementation. 


NOTE: It is important to handle perlite properly to avoid potential irritation of the eyes, skin, or respiratory system. It is recommended to wear a dust mask and work in a well-ventilated area when handling perlite.

Oasis Cubes

Oasis cubes are made from a specialized foam material that retains water and provides support to plant roots. They have good water retention properties, allowing plants to access moisture for extended periods. Oasis cubes also offer aeration to the roots, helping to prevent overwatering and root rot.

Oasis cubes have limited nutrient-holding capacity and so you need to pay close attention to the nutrients supplied and ensure that plants receive adequate nutrients. Also, oasis cubes are not biodegradable. They are made from a synthetic foam material that does not readily break down or decompose in the environment.

NFT A Frame Spinach Hydroponics

What is Hydroponics?

Hydroponics is a process of growing plants, wherein the soil is replaced by water i.e. – the roots remain soaked in a water-based nutrient solution instead of soil, absorbing all the minerals required for growing from the water reservoir.

Different Types of Hydroponic Technologies

Kratky Hydroponics

Kratky hydroponics is a non-circulating, passive hydroponic method of growing plants. This method is simple, low-cost, and requires minimal maintenance, making it a great option for those new to hydroponics or with limited resources.

In the Kratky method, plants are placed in a container filled with a nutrient solution. The container is sealed to prevent evaporation, and the plants are allowed to grow without the need for a pump or other equipment to circulate the nutrient solution. As the plants grow, they consume the nutrients in the solution & the water level in the container drops.

This system is better for growing small plants and on a small scale.

DWC Hydroponics

DWC, or Deep Water Culture, is a method of hydroponics where plants are grown with their roots submerged in a nutrient-rich solution. This solution is typically oxygenated with an air pump to ensure the roots receive enough oxygen to allow the plants to grow.

DWC system offers several advantages making it a popular choice among hydroponic growers. Firstly, the simplicity and low cost of setting up and maintaining a DWC system attract beginners and those on a budget. The efficient nutrient uptake in DWC allows plants to absorb nutrients more effectively, leading to accelerated growth and higher yields.


Plant roots require oxygen for their healthy growth. In the DWC system, we use an air pump to oxygenate water. Oxygen depletion in the nutrient solution is one of the main concerns with DWC systems. If this system is not well maintained, the plant roots can suffocate in the nutrient solution.

NFT Hydroponics

NFT hydroponics, also known as Nutrient Film Technique, is a method of hydroponic cultivation where a thin film or stream of nutrient-rich water flows over the plant roots. 

  • In an NFT system, plants are typically grown in troughs or channels with a slight slope. The nutrient solution is continuously pumped into the highest end of the channel and then flows over the plant roots in a thin film. The excess nutrient solution is collected and recirculated back to the reservoir for reuse. 
  • The shallow film of water provides a continuous supply of nutrients, water, and oxygen to the roots, allowing for efficient nutrient uptake. 
  • NFT hydroponics is well-suited for growing leafy greens, herbs, and other lightweight plants. 
  • It offers advantages such as water conservation, ease of maintenance, and effective nutrient delivery. However, it also requires careful monitoring and management of nutrient levels, pH, and water flow to ensure optimal plant growth and prevent root drying.

 Dutch Bucket Hydroponics

It is a recirculating  hydroponic growing system that uses buckets or containers filled with a growing medium such as hydrotons, coconut coir, or vermiculite, to support plant growth. In this system, a small hole is made in the bottom of the bucket, and a drip line is inserted to provide a constant supply of nutrient-rich water to the plant roots. 
  • This system is popular among hydroponic growers as they are relatively inexpensive to set up, can be easily scaled up or down depending on the size of the growing operation, and allow for greater control over the nutrient solution and pH levels.
  • Dutch bucket systems are best for growing vining crops like tomato, bell pepper, cucumber, zucchini, etc.

Ebb & Flow Hydroponics

Ebb and Flow, also known as Flood and Drain, is a hydroponic system that involves periodically flooding the plant roots with a nutrient-rich solution and then allowing it to drain away.

  • In this system, plants are placed in a grow tray or container filled with a growing medium, such as perlite or clay pellets, which supports the plants and provides aeration. 
  • A reservoir holds the nutrient solution, and a pump is used to periodically flood the grow tray with the solution. 
  • During the flood cycle, the plant roots absorb water and nutrients, promoting healthy growth. After the flood cycle, the excess solution drains back into the reservoir, allowing the roots to receive oxygen during the rest period. 
  • Ebb and Flow hydroponics are popular due to their simplicity, flexibility, and ability to automate watering. It is suitable for a variety of plants and offers efficient nutrient delivery, but proper monitoring and maintenance are necessary to ensure optimal growth and prevent issues like nutrient imbalances or waterlogging.

Choosing the best hydroponics system requires careful consideration of several factors.

What is TDS?

TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids. It is the total amount of inorganic and organic substances dissolved in water or other liquids. These dissolved substances can include minerals, salts, metals, etc. TDS is typically measured in parts per million (ppm) and is an important parameter for assessing water quality.

Why is TDS so important in hydroponics?

Water Quality Indicator

A higher TDS reading indicates a higher concentration of dissolved salts and minerals, while a lower TDS reading indicates a lower concentration.

If the raw water TDS is high it can lead to nutrient locking, which can result in poor growth and nutrient deficiencies in plants. Also, the higher the TDS, the higher the chances of the presence of harmful elements or chemicals. So it is advisable to use RO water with a lesser TDS for more control over the nutrition you provide for your plants. It is advisable to use water with a TDS of less than 250 ppm. The lower the better.

TDS Tolerance

TDS requirements for every plant are different from others. For example, lettuces and exotics need a tds range of 700-800 ppm, while tomatoes can tolerate a tds of 2100 ppm.

You can never treat lettuces and tomatoes alike and provide the same TDS levels as it can lead to nutrient burn in lettuce plants. It is very important to understand the plant's needs and provide the right TDS range as per the crops you grow. Also, note that the TDS requirement for small plants is less when you compare it with big plants.

TDS Maintenance in Hydroponics

Start with RO Water

Reverse Osmosis (RO) water is commonly used for hydroponics as it is free of many dissolved minerals and contaminants that may be present in tap water or well water. With RO water you have better control over the nutrients you provide for your plants.

Using a Quality TDS Meter

Every action to increase or decrease the TDS depends on the reading you observe from the TDS meter. So it is crucial to use a good quality and reliable TDS meter that is clean and calibrated regularly.

Never Overdose!

Overdosing nutrients in hydroponics can lead to a number of problems for your plants like nutrient burn, altered pH levels, salt buildup, and reduced plant growth.

Regular TDS Monitoring

Check the TDS of the nutrient solution at least once every day and take necessary action based on the reading. It is also important to monitor the plant's growth and check for signs of any trouble. If the leaf edges turn brown and become brittle (nutrient burn), it means the TDS is too high and we need to reduce it immediately.

In hydroponics, TDS is an essential parameter for maintaining optimal plant growth and overall system health. An NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) channel is a component of a hydroponic system that provides a narrow, shallow channel or trough for growing plants. The channels are typically made from different kinds of plastic and are designed to hold a thin film of nutrient-rich water that flows continuously over the plant's roots.


In this blog, we will understand some of the key factors that need to be considered when choosing the NFT channel or gully for your hydroponics farm.

1. Material

The NFT channel should be made of a durable, food-grade material that can withstand exposure to nutrient solutions and sunlight.

NOTE: Using PVC pipes and C-PVC pipes is not good as they have lead and chlorine as stabilising materials respectively. These can leach into the nutrient solution and can be absorbed by plants.

2. Maintenance & Cleaning

NFT channels will have algae, and some debris & need cleaning after every harvest cycle to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and pathogens.


An openable channel is good to maintain & clean. But wait, are all openable channels the same?

Some bad NFT channel designs, though they are openable!

Cleaning and sterilising the entire NFT hydroponic system is a must after every harvest cycle because of the algae and different kinds of debris. When the channels are either not openable or very difficult to open, the entire cleaning process becomes too labour-intensive. This impacts the cost of the operations and delays the start of the next crop cycle.

What can be the best design?

3. Size & Depth

The NFT channel should be wide enough to provide adequate growing space for the plants, but not so wide that the nutrient solution becomes too shallow. The depth of the channel is dependent on the variety of plants you grow.
Ideal depth of NFT channel for growing different plants
1. 50mm for lettuces and exotic crops.
2. 65mm for growing Indian greens like spinach, amaranthus, methi etc.
3. 100mm for plants like strawberries

Overall, when choosing the NFT channel for your hydroponics system, consider the material with which the channels are made (prefer a channel made of plastic which is both lead-free and food-grade). Always opt for a channel that can be both opened and closed very easily to make the process less labour-intensive. Finally make sure to use the correct size of NFT channel based on the crops you intend to grow to reduce your capital cost.

Horizontal NFT

Horizontal NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) hydroponics is a type of hydroponic system where plants are grown in a flat, shallow trough or channel filled with a thin film of nutrient-rich water. The plants are suspended above the water, and the roots are exposed to the flowing nutrient solution. The water is recirculated through the system, delivering nutrients to the plant's roots and flowing back into a reservoir.

A-Frame NFT

A-frame NFT hydroponics is a type of hydroponic system where plants are grown on angled frames in a vertical arrangement. The frames are typically arranged in an "A" shape, hence the name A-frame. The plants are grown in channels on the angled surfaces of the frames, and a thin film of nutrient-rich water flows over the roots of the plants.

Differences Between Horizontal NFT & Vertical A-Frame Structures.

1. Sunlight

In the case of horizontal NFT units, all the plants receive the same amount of sunlight, and the growth is even. You can see in the above image that all the plants that belong to the same batch are grown uniformly, as the sunlight is even on all plants.

In A-frame structures, only the top levels get sufficient sunlight. The lop-level plants cast a shadow on the lower-level plants resulting in reduced growth. You can see the same in the above picture where basil grown in the bottom levels is not as big as compared to the ones on the top level.

2. Growth of Plants.

As discussed in the above point, all plants in the H-bed receive light uniformly and adequately. Hence the growth of every plant in the H-bed is optimum and uniform. But in the case of an A-frame structure, only the top-level plants are grown to their full capacity and the lower levels exhibit reduced growth due to their increased competition for light and space.
To avoid this, in an A-frame structure you can choose to grow small-height plants.

3. Number of Plants

Due to vertical orientation, you can have up to 20 % more plants in A-frames compared to horizontal hydroponic structure.

4. Kind of Plants to Choose

Horizontal beds are suitable for taller plants like basil, kale, swiss chard, spinach, etc. You can also grow small-height plants in these beds. 

A-frames are suitable for growing small-height plants like baby spinach, lettuces, parsley, rocket, celery, coriander, tot soi etc.

A-Frame NFT Hydroponic System

A-frame NFT hydroponics is a type of hydroponic system where plants are grown on angled frames in a vertical arrangement. The frames are typically arranged in an "A" shape, hence the name A-frame. The plants are grown in channels on the angled surfaces of the frames, and a thin film of nutrient-rich water flows over the roots of the plants.

An A-frame NFT structure can have up to 20% more plants when compared with a horizontal NFT system. But if it is not implemented correctly, it can be less efficient when compared to growing in horizontal beds.

In this blog, we will discuss three common mistakes that people do when installing A-frame structures.

1. Height of A-Frame

Naturally, when the height of the A-frame is too high it becomes increasingly difficult for any person to perform tasks like transplanting, taking care of the sapling or harvesting the plants. As such keep the height of A-frames to a level that is easily accessible by the workers in your farm. 

2. Base Width

You can indeed accommodate more plants in the same floor area by having a narrow base. But when the base is too narrow, the height of the A-frame increases, which poses operational difficulties. Also, an A-frame with a narrow base will have an increased plant density, which can limit the  growth of the plants at the lowers levels due to increased competition for sunlight and space.

3. Growing Tall Plants

Sunlight & Photosynthesis

In A-frame structures, the top-level plants will cast a shadow on the lower plants. This reduces the amount of sunlight that lower plants receive, thereby reducing the amount of photosynthesis and hence plant's size and yield.

Plant Growing Direction

As the top-level plants cast a shadow on the lower-level plants, these lower-level plants tend to grow in the outward direction in search of sunlight, instead of growing straight naturally. This can affect the photosynthesis process, which could lead to stunted growth and reduced yield.

A-frames are best suitable for growing small-height plants like baby spinach, lettuces, parsley, rocket, celery, coriander, tot soi etc.

In conclusion, when you are setting up an A-frame NFT hydroponics system, do avoid these common mistakes in order to get the best output from you A-frame structures.

Grow Bag System

This system uses bags made of porous fabric or plastic to grow plants. Plants are grown directly in the bags filled with a growing medium such as soil or a soilless mix like cocopeat. In a commercial grow bag system, the bags are typically made of high-quality, durable materials such as heavy-duty plastic or synthetic fabric. The use of grow bags in a commercial setting offers several advantages, including the ability to grow crops in a variety of locations, reduced water usage compared to traditional field-based agriculture, and increased crop yield per square foot of growing space.

Dutch Bucket System

It is a recirculating  hydroponic growing system that uses buckets or containers filled with a growing medium such as hydrotons, coconut coir, or vermiculite, to support plant growth. In this system, a small hole is made in the bottom of the bucket, and a drip line is inserted to provide a constant supply of nutrient-rich water to the plant roots. This system is popular among hydroponic growers as they are relatively inexpensive to set up, can be easily scaled up or down depending on the size of the growing operation, and allow for greater control over the nutrient solution and pH levels.

Key points to consider!

Water Usage

Grow bags are more water-intensive than Dutch bucket systems, as excess water is not recirculated back to the plants like in a closed-loop system.

One study published in the Journal of Agricultural Science and Technology in 2015 compared the water use efficiency of tomato plants grown in a Dutch bucket system and a soilless grow bag system. The study found that the Dutch bucket system used 50% less water than the grow bag system, while producing similar yields of tomato fruits.


Another study published in the Journal of Horticultural Science & Biotechnology in 2016 compared water and nutrient use in a closed-loop Dutch bucket system and an open hydroponic system using grow bags. The study found that the closed-loop Dutch bucket system used 25% less water and 25% less nutrients than the open hydroponic system, while producing similar yields of cucumber fruits.

Maintenance

Both grow bag and Dutch bucket systems can be easy to maintain in a commercial setting, but each system has its own unique maintenance requirements.

Grow bag systems can be easier to set up & maintain initially, as they require minimal equipment and can be set up quickly. However, grow bags can be more difficult to clean and reuse between crops, as the bags can harbor pathogens or debris. They also require regular monitoring and adjustment of nutrient levels and pH, which can be time-consuming.


Dutch bucket systems can require more initial investment in equipment and infrastructure, but can be easier to maintain in the long term. The buckets can be easily cleaned and sterilized between crops, reducing the risk of pathogen buildup.

Yield

One study published in the International Journal of Agriculture and Biology compared the yields of tomatoes grown in grow bags and Dutch buckets in a greenhouse environment. The results showed that the Dutch bucket system had a higher yield per plant compared to the grow bags, with an average yield of 1.98 kg/plant compared to 1.49 kg/plant in the grow bags.

Another study published in the Journal of Plant Nutrition compared the yields of lettuce grown in grow bags and Dutch buckets in a hydroponic system. The results showed that the Dutch bucket system had a higher yield per square meter compared to the grow bags, with an average yield of 19.38 kg/m2 compared to 15.26 kg/m2 in the grow bags.

Though Dutch bucket systems are more efficient in many ways we predominantly see more no. of grow bag setups in India, due to high initial setup costs and lack of understanding of the system.

What is Subsidy?

A subsidy is a financial aid or assistance provided by the government or an organization to a particular individual, group, or business to promote economic activities or encourage certain behaviors. Subsidies can come in various forms, including cash payments, tax breaks, reduced interest rates on loans, or direct assistance such as grants.

In India, both state and central governments provide subsidies for polyhouse setups and farming to encourage agricultural production and promote modern farming practices. The subsidies and their eligibility criteria may vary depending on the state and the specific scheme. But the subsidy provided by the central government via National Horticulture Board (NHB) does not vary from state to state.


In this blog we will look into the subsidy that NHB provides for supporting protected cultivation in India.

The NHB provides financial assistance for the development of commercial horticulture through various schemes, including the Construction of Polyhouses, Shade Net Houses, and Rain Shelters scheme. It provides up to 50% subsidy for the cost of construction of polyhouses and shade net houses.

Minimum Area for Availing Subsidy

Polyhouses having an area above 2500 sqm are eligible for subsidy. In the case of the Northeast region, the minimum area is over 1000 sqm.

What is the Subsidy Amount?

You can get up to 50% subsidy with an upper limit of 56 lakhs.

Eligible Crops 

Vegetables:  Capsicum, Cucumber, and Tomatoes.


Flowers: Anthurium, Orchids, Rose, Lilium, Chrysanthemum, Carnation and Gerbera.
